About Rosie

Thinking back my childhood is rich with the sound of children and the smell of toil from an industrial sewing machine.

From a modest North London semi, colour emanated from stacked oil paintings and mingled with the smell of roses, vines, and fruit trees from the mural lined walls of the garden. My parents were creatives, mother was a dress maker and father a gardener/painter. Together dad would start a painting and mother would finish it off and at home us kids were always making.

It wasn’t until I had worked the 9-5 life, feeling unfulfilled, I took up evening classes in drawing and printmaking. This led to me exploring painting on a foundation course at Harrow College until finally I won my place at Bath Art College, the former Bath Academy to study for a fine art degree. I was influenced by the painting tutors Ed Whitaker, Maria Lalic and Michael Simpson. It has a rich heritage of famous painters.

On graduating I eventually set up my first art studio at ACAVA in Ladbroke in London and my current studio is based at The Colour Factory in Winchester where I practice and teach.

Recently I appeared on Sky Arts “Landscape Artist of the Year” 2021, Series 6 in Episode 4. A collage painting was selected from thousands and on the show, I painted in oil from a landscape within Churchills Chartwell – you can see some of my process on there.

When I paint, I like to combine observations with memory and want the work to exude an integrity and humanity. Sometimes childhood memories spill out into an urban landscape and other times it is a feeling of a distant, forgotten land. Along with these are the relief paintings – here paper or cloth sit raised above the flats of a canvas, nestling in paint trails, or a word/symbol will give a clue as to the story to be unravelled.

I hope you enjoy my painting and please do get in touch with questions via email. Rosie x
